Which is greater?
These mathematician is working on finding 100 less than a number. Using base ten blocks is a great way to visualize his thinking!
putting it all together
Look at this reader! He read a text, then put the main events in the order they happened and he had a blast doing this activity!
Happy valentine’s day!
Share Your thinking
These two friends shared the work responsibility and then explained their thinking for the portions they completed to the audience. Their objective was to use strategies to find 10 more, 10 less, 100 more and 100 less than a number.
Solve & discuss
One of our brave friends shared his thinking during Solve & Discuss to determine 10 more and 10 less than a number.
Furry Friends return
Our furry friends, Charlie (pictured here), Wilbur and Pepe, joined us again this month from WM Therapy Dogs to read with us.

Persistence & place value drawings pay off when adding three, two-digit addends. Demonstrating persistence is always something to be proud of!
words theIr way
One of our friends beginning his day with one of our daily routines, Words Their Way!
Hard work pays off
Check out how well this friend did showing a place value drawing and the standard algorithm to independently divide a decimal by a whole number. And, that’s not even the best part. Check out her little note in the upper right hand corner.
happy halloween
Wishing you a Happy Halloween from some of your favorite Monopoly Board pieces! Be safe & think smart trick-or-treating tonight!
Show me the money
Using practical examples such as money to tackle concepts such as division of multi-digit numbers supports learners take part in the rigorous NY Engage math lessons.
What's the big deal?
Students are using a protocol, DEAL to grow as mathematical problem solvers. DEAL stands for Drawing, Equation, Answer and Label. In order to solve math problems, they need to attempt each of these parts of the problem. These kids are growing each day as mathematicians and they are kind of a big deal.
Math RtI
These two friends work together at the whiteboard to problem solve during a math RtI lesson. They are working together to determine what number is equal to 7 tens and 19 ones. These mini-lessons are aimed at building foundational math skills, with a particular focus here on place value.
Our furry friends return
Our furry friends, Pepe, Wilbur & Charlie returned to our classroom this school year to support us in becoming independent readers. Reading with these friends helps us to build our stamina and love for reading. These friends visit our classroom once a month.
Fluent & Accurate Readers
An important part of growing as readers is building stamina and a love for independent reading. This is one of the tools we use to build our independent reading skill set.
EBLI (Evidence based literacy intervention)
Multi-syllable spellings
One way to grow as readers & writers is to use strategies to problem solve unknown multi-syllabic words. Here one of our 5th grade friends is used EBLI and multi-syllabic spelling strategies to problem solve an unknown word, encouraging!
Hope college student
When we return from our holiday break we will have the opportunity to work with a Hope College Special Education major. She will be learning alongside us on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. We look forward to meeting, learning, and growing with Miss Madeline Day.
THerapy dogs
Meet Wilbur, Charlie & Pepe, our three furry friends that visit our classroom each month. These three dogs and their owners are registered West Michigan Therapy dogs/members and they come to read with us. They help us to become more comfortable and confident with reading. These furry friends are lots of fun and so is reading!
race to one dollar
One way we practice multiplying by 5’s is by playing race to $1.00 using nickels. Place value, multiplication, and life skills being built through this simple and engaging game!
New books
A HUGE thank you to one of our 2nd grade student’s family for their generous donation of these brand new books for our classroom.
Word patterns
Looking for patterns in words helps to build stronger readers that can problem solve difficult words.
Math matters
Math groups that focus on specific foundational skills help propel mathematicians forward.
Turkey TRouble
Learning and understanding multiplication and division facts can be tricky! This festive “turkey trouble” matching game makes it more fun.
SEquencE of events
One way we become stronger readers is by sequencing the most important events in a story to retell it.

AWESOME AUTHORS
Each fall, the Skywriter's visit our school to help us get excited about all different kinds of writing! They teach us all about what good writer's do - think it up and write it down. These "sky-writers" return in the spring and perform 5 nominated by teachers, and selected by the "sky-writers" team stories in a school wide assembly. This year, one of our very own student's stories was selected to be performed by the Skywriters team. Congratulations, awesome author!
kalamazoo air zoo
Each year, the 4th grade students go on a classroom field trip to the Kalamazoo Air zoo. Last school year, Miss Schaab was able to attend the field trip with the 4th grade students. There was lots to see, learn and experience at the Air Zoo!
MORE furry Friends
Last fall, Mrs. Gust joined Miss Schaab and some friends for lunch in our classroom. Over lunch we played games, go to know one another, laughed, and visited with Mrs. Gust's two HUGE dogs, Isabelle and Ana. It was an extra-special treat to share lunch with the school principal and these furry friends.
